The GSX400FS features the air-cooled 4-stroke inline 4-cylinder DOHC 4-valve engine equipped with Twin Swirl Combustion Chambers (TSCCs) that generates maximum horsepower of 48 PS and was successfully adopted on the GSX400F. Thorough weight reduction measures help to create a superb balance between excellent fuel economy and riding performance. The sporty nature of the GSX400FS was further enhanced by the adoption of a cyclone type 4-into-1 muffler that realizes excellent exhaust efficiency, double Anti Nose Dive Forks (ANDF), and a rear suspension featuring the world’s first remote-controlled mechanism that simultaneously adjusts the left and right damping force. The name “IMPULSE” expresses the model’s punchy and dynamic performance.

Developed under the concept of realizing a completely new sporty model, the GSX-400X IMPULSE is a street bike that combines sharp styling and advanced mechanisms. The 400 cm³ 4-stroke 4-cylinder DOHC engine features the new Suzuki Advanced Three-way Cooling System (SATCS) that realizes greatly enhanced cooling efficiency. In addition, advanced technologies were incorporated in every part of this model, including a newly designed wide frame made of square steel pipes, a new mechanism with superlative rear wheel road-holding performance, and the Excellent Full-Floater Suspension.

With a long bore × stroke ratio (i.e., the ratio between the piston diameter and the length of the stroke) of 0.9, large-capacity air cleaner box, and optimized 4-into-1 muffler, this model combines powerful dynamism in the low- to mid-rpm range with smooth performance at high revs. In addition to a natural riding position and excellent rideability, the GSX400 IMPULSE was designed to showcase the true essence of a motorcycle through a sharp and memorable silhouette that incorporates the fuel tank, side covers, and the shape of the tail fairing.
