1954 | Colleda CO

Suzuki’s landmark first fully-fledged motorcycle featuring various cycle motor technologies

Colleda CO

The Colleda CO is Suzuki’s first true motorcycle. Unlike previous models powered by bicycle engines (or “cycle motors”), this model combined a stamped channel frame with a 90 cm³ 4-stroke OHV 1-cylinder engine generating horsepower of 3 PS. This engine featured a flywheel magnet equipped with automatic spark advance to control the ignition timing for the first time. It was also the first model in Japan to include a speedometer. The engine was paired with the first rotary 3-speed transmission adopted on a motorcycle. The Colleda CO is also notable for its refined chassis design, which included features such as a 7-liter capacity teardrop-shaped fuel tank. This model was known as the CO-L. The CO-K version was also developed featuring a pipe frame and engine cover.

1955 | Colleda COX

Model equipped with higher displacement engine in response to changes in Japan’s motorcycle license system

Colleda COX

The changes to Japan’s motorcycle license system that accompanied the revisions to the Road Traffic Act in 1954, accelerated the domination of 125 cm³ models in the 51 to 125 cm³ class. The Colleda COX was developed in response to this trend as a minor change of the Colleda CO by widening the bore of the 90 cm³ 4-stroke air-cooled OHV engine of that model to raise displacement to 125 cm³. Other components, such as the crankshaft bearings, were also improved, resulting in a top speed of 75 km/h and maximum horsepower of 4 PS.
