Suzuki SV650’s Illustrious History

With a V-Twin engine that was made more mature relentlessly over time and a chassis designed to match, the SV650X ABS’s sterling performance is backed by an extensive development history.

With a total of more than 265,000 units sold worldwide (as of October 2017), the iconic SV650/400 series has proved to be a major hit for Suzuki. Over an 18-year period, the SV650 has delivered a sporty, zestful ride to bikers everywhere. Building on a rich heritage, the custom style SV650X ABS is destined to carry the series’ legendary reputation for riding exhilaration into the future.

In 1999, Suzuki released the original SV650-a model that was designed to deliver the fun of V-Twin sport riding for all riders. The SV650 instantly became a rider’s phenomenon around the world. Not only was this universally-friendly motorcycle eminently suited to the streets; it was right at home on the racetrack too.

The SV650 was an extremely light and quick-turning motorcycle with immediate and powerful throttle response. It was also forgiving and easy to ride. A rider could ride it with confidence, and experience the fun of lightweight V-Twin sport riding both on winding roads and on the racetrack.

As an unprecedented new concept for a motorcycle, the SV650 also attracted recognition in Japan by combining lightness and ease of use on the streets with stability and sporty performance over the long haul such as when touring. In addition to the original 650cm3 engine version, in order to conform to Japanese licensing laws, Suzuki equipped the SV400 version with a 400cm3 engine exclusively for the Japanese market.

In 2003, Suzuki updated the SV650/S with fuel injection, higher performance and a sportier character.  Even so in today’s V-Twin cup of local club racing, the starting grids are still filled with many SV650’s. The SV650 is arguably the best motorcycle for many people.

In 2016, Suzuki introduced the SV650 focusing more clearly on the characteristics of its V-Twin motor as mentioned below. The SV650 had greater engine performance, class-leading fuel economy, lighter weight and a sportier package.

- Linear power delivery throughout the rev range

- Slim and lightweight chassis

- V-Twin’s unique beat and rumble

- A great package any rider can enjoy.

Designed according to a “Back to its origin” concept, the SV650 offered fun-to-ride appeal to motorcyclists worldwide. The superb handling owing to its slim, lightweight chassis, and the inimitable riding feel only a V-Twin engine can deliver, earned the SV650 substantial praise in the market.

The SV650X ABS inherits the SV650’s engine and almost the entire bodywork of the base model. But the SV650X ABS immediately grabs attention with its retro-appeal. Its eye-catching slotted headlight cowling, clip-on handlebars, tuck-and-roll seat and blacked-out rider and pillion footrests all accentuate the SV650X ABS’s café racer style custom bike looks.

In 2009, Suzuki introduced GLADIUS to meet the growing demand for a more fashionable street bike. In addition, GLADIUS 400 with a 400cm3 engine was launched as a Japan-only model.

An SV650 custom styling prototype announced by Suzuki as the SV650 Rally concept, was unveiled in the spring of 2016 at the Osaka/Tokyo Motorcycle Show. The motif takes the 1970's tarmac rally car as its source of imagery, linking that styling essence with the sports image of Suzuki in an expression of Suzuki's own inimitable style. The concept bike generated a lot of interest at the show, and Suzuki used the occasion to learn as much as possible about market expectations.

Dual Spark Technology

Suzuki’s Dual Spark Technology utilises two spark plugs per cylinder for precision ignition. The result is increased combustion efficiency, smoother power delivery, lower fuel consumption and lower emissions.

Clip-on Handlebars

Clip-on handlebars encourage a sporty riding position, and hark back to the days of the original café racers.

Front Preload Adjuster

Front forks are equipped with a preload Adjuster, allowing you to set suspension firmness for exactly the way you want to ride.

LED Fog Lamp Set

Tires

The SV650X adopts Dunlop Roadsmart III tires. Well-grounded with exceptional performance in the wet, the Roadsmart III’s assure confident handling.

Low RPM Assist

The TI-ISC (Throttle body Integrated Idle Speed Control) has a Low RPM Assist control function. When moving off or riding at low engine rpm, the ECM activates the ISC system. By opening the ISC circuits, the engine rpm rises slightly. Normally, in launching the motorcycle, engine rpm drops when the clutch is engaged. Low RPM Assist helps the rider achieve a smoother launch operation in the low rpm range. This makes it easier to ride at low speed in stop-and-go traffic.

Pistons and Rings

In order to further improve overall fuel efficiency and emissions control, the V-Twin engine adopts two innovations: resin coating on the piston skirt for minimised friction between the cylinder and piston, and a special L-shaped piston ring for enhanced sealing performance and blow-by gas reduction.

Tuck-and-Roll Seat

The narrow, streamlined seat exudes retro looks and feel. The seat has soft cushioning, helping reduce rider fatigue, even in a sporty riding position.

Suzuki Easy Start System

The Suzuki Easy Start System engages the starter motor at a precisely timed preset interval to start the motorcycle with just a push of a button. ECM checks the status and disengages the starter motor immediately after starting.

The pulsing caused by irregular firing intervals adds to the pleasure of the ride.

The V-Twin engine generates substantial low-end torque and a power surge in the higher rpm range. These two engine character traits combine and complement each other.

Power output is smooth and easy to control. This means you get the power delivery you want at any time, irrespective of the riding circumstances - whether you are riding on city streets, winding country lanes or at higher speeds on the highway.

Stylish Slotted Headlight Cowling

The round multi-reflector headlight is equipped with a stylish headlight cowling. Slots in the headlight sides are reminiscent of heritage racers, accentuating the SV650X’s personality.

Optional Fog Lamps

The LED fog lamps match the stylish headlight cowling, highlighting the SV650X’s intense character. The lamps feature high brightness LED and superior light distribution characteristics.

Fuel Tank

The tank’s emblem has been changed from the signature “S” mark to the SUZUKI logo. The design has a definite retro look. Additionally, the tank capacity has been increased from 13.8L to 14.5L. Combined with the SV650X’s excellent fuel efficiency, this substantially extends your riding range.

AT YOUR COMMAND - TIME FOR A RIDE

With the SV650X, you will make the time to ride. Its lightweight and slim profile responds to your commands, promoting agile handling and leaving you to enjoy a ride that suits your style. Aboard the SV650X you’ll ride through the city and winding country roads in classic café racer style.
