Team Suzuki Ecstar’s MotoGP™ outfit Mir in the action at Assen for the Dutch GP.4began the 2021 season with the same popular and successful line-up as they’ve had since 2019. Arguably there was more pressure on the shoulders of the riders, 25 year old Alex Rins and 23 year old Joan Mir, after the latter achieved the incredible feat last year of winning the MotoGP™ World Championship - Suzuki’s first for 20 years. The squad also took the Teams’ Championship for the first time ever, and Rins managed third place in the standings. However, the added weight of these achievements was something the Hamamatsu squad shied away from, preferring to keep their heads down and work in the same methodical manner as always. Project Leader and Manager, Shinichi Sahara explains: “We have never been obsessed with things like ‘defending the world title’ - we don’t feel that pressure. A victory is the final achievement of consistent, positive and healthy work done over a whole race weekend and a whole season. And I think we need to be ‘challenger’ rather than ‘defender’, to achieve the ultimate target. We prefer to think race by race, challenging to improve for the best result.”in 2021 to try and keep the season ticking over with the Covid-19 pandemic still raging on. The first two races of the year were in Qatar followed by tightly-packed rounds in Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, Catalunya, Germany, and Holland. In the first half of the season the riders and teams did a whopping nine races in 13 weeks. This gruelling schedule, coupled with travel difficulties, made life tricky for all involved, but Team Suzuki Ecstar did their utmost to get a steady campaign underway. The calendar has been modified once again “I would say that things are going to plan and the team and I know where to focus our efforts for the coming rounds.” – JOAN MIRMotoGP™
