We caught up with ‘AJ’ in America, before the incident, to hear his story on how his career started and just how he has risen to the pinnacle of this sport.How did you get started in “I got my first bike on my fourth birthday. It was kind of too big and I couldn’t still ride the two wheels, so I got the little two-wheel helpers. It was just always as a hobby for a long time, just always enjoying riding.”When did you realise you were good enough to make motocross your profession? “I don’t know. It was hard to say because in Lithuania I was from the very beginning one of the best riders I guess, but Lithuania was such a low level. When I used to come to other countries like Belgium or somewhere else, it used to be so tough for me because with the tracks and everything. It’s hard to say, but My dad brought me into it fiat’s how he it actually only turned out to be the past couple of years that I really started to progress.”Obviously, you’re a big guy now, but have you always been tall for your age?“When I was really young, I definitely wasn’t big in my age group. Around sixteen I was already fairly big but I was quite okay for the bike. But then, 17, 18 years old, I became quite a tall guy. Now I’m 198cm and I think one of the tallest MXGP riders. It’s been hard on my body because I’m young and I’ve grown up quite quick in a big size. My muscles, it has to get some time to get them stronger I think.
