04It was around the curves of Silverstone that Maverick marked himself out as a very special rider with an emotional first MotoGP win for Suzuki since 2007. The 21-year-old led the shortened second-part race in full dry condition to win by three seconds from Cal Crutchlow and Valentino Rossi. He said: “The victory was really emotional, my first in MotoGP and also the first for Suzuki since 2007. My feeling with the machine was perfect that day, I tried to push hard at the beginning to take advantage and then I just controlled the race from there.” Two more podiums followed for Maverick, with third places at both Motegi and Phillip Island. The Spaniard would sign-off his career with Suzuki with an impressive fourth overall in the world championship with 202 points. For Aleix, qualifying was initially more of a struggle, but two fifth-place finishes at Austin and Jerez hinted that better was to come. Sadly, a run of six DNFs over the course of the year hamstrung Espargaró’s final championship standings in comparison to his team-mate; who only failed to finish one race in the 18-race season. A fourth-placed finish behind Maverick in Japan was Aleix’s best result of the year. He said: “I’m proud of having been a part of the history that we’ve written with this team for Suzuki; the whole team was amazing and we really created a family. Also, the bike now is a really good bike, so I’m proud I gave my contribution to it. Season Review #2
