One is in the team’s status: Gone from “wait-and-see” to “they’re back!”Another is in the confidence in the pit box. That’s gone from cautious optimism to serious expectation. Most trenchant, however, are the results sheets. They tell the whole story, not only about the die-hard grand prix racing company’s first podium finish since 2008, but also in the overall results.Last year, after eleven races, Suzuki’s best scorer was Maverick Vinales, lying 11th overall with 62 points, with a best finish of sixth. By year’s end, he’d finished sixth one more time, but dropped to 12th, behind team-mate Aleix Espargaro.03TEAM SUZUKI RACING NEWSSuzuki’s progress in year two back in MotoGP can be measured in several ways.In 2016, eleven races in, the same rider had not only claimed his first top-three podium finish, but he had only finished out of the top six in three races. Add in two front row starts, and note also that team-mate Espargaro has been in the top six three times, compared with just once in the whole of 2015, and the picture is clear. There are two reasons for improvement. First, quite simply, horsepower. Year two for the in-line-four GSX- RR, the factory’s returning racer after three years away, sees a faster motorcycle.Team manager Davide Brivio explains. “This was biggest improvement was the engine. one area where we were suffering last year. We had a good bike, good chassis – the riders were very happy about the turning and handling, but we were suffering on the straights. In only one winter I have to say we really caught up. To be honest, this year I never hear the riders to talk any more about engines. The MotoGP there is “one” manufacturer which “In clearly has the fastest engine. But we caught up with the other competitors in terms of performance and speed.”Maverick echoes the comment. “Star rider power improved. And it is still getting better, even in the last races.”But the Spaniard thinks the second step was more important.“For me, the seamless gearbox was the biggest improvement.”This gives gear-shifts with no interruption to the flow of power. making the bike much more stable. Instead of the suspension and balance being interrupted with each shift, it just keeps on flowing. At this year’s Brno GP, Vinales measured the combination of power and stability. The greatest importance is in “In the uphill section we are doing maybe six or seven kilometres an hour more. In all the corners when you shift gears, the bike is stable and doesn’t move.”The After extensive testing, this radical gearbox came on stream for 2016. It was developed, Brivio explained, in-house. “We looked around for some external know-how, but the factory put it together.”In 2015, the Suzuki had a reputation for sweet handling but a lack of speed. has put the chassis to the test. It passed.Brivio: “Everybody else was saying that our chassis was good because the power was not so big, and that with more power we would be in trouble factory engineers were quite relaxed about that, and confident that the chassis would be good anyway. And that’s what happened. What we are using is pretty much the base of last year’s chassis.… but I always saw that our The extra power Season Review #1“THE POWER IMPROVED. AND IT IS STILL GETTING BETTER, EVEN IN THE LAST RACES.”
