WWDuring 30 years the GSX-R750 has spawned a long list of family members in capacities from 250 to 1100cc. Over the decades engines from the GSX-R family have found homes in other models, naked machines like the Bandit, GSR and GSX-F ranges. 22 TEAM SUZUKI RACINGAs well as single-handedly beginning the race-replica craze in the 1980s, the GSX-R also formed the cult of specials, such as the ‘streetfighter’ craze of the 1990s, where crashed bikes were shorn of their fairings to create aggressive urban street bikes. GSX-Rs have also helped start or help develop many a race career, from the likes of Doug Polen and Kevin Schwantz, through to James young riders such as Alex Lowes. With 30 years as the best 750 superbike, we can’t wait for the next three decades of GSX-R excellence and excess!Whitham, John Reynolds and today’s Merlin engine used in the Spitfire, Mustang in October 2015 Racing News The WII was 23TECHNICAL KNOIt may have looked like nothing else seen before, but much of the GSX-R750F’s tech was tried and tested. 18-INCH The GS1000R XR41 used 18-inch rims rather than the road-bike fashion for 16-inch, so Suzuki went this way with the road-going GSX-R750F too. This also allowed the use of larger 300mm brake discs. MEFRAThe frame itself was based on the XR41’s. Suzuki had experience of alloy frames from the RG250, and in racing they had also just developed an aluminium alloy that didn’t need heat-treating after welding, which would help save on production time and costs. Geometry was identical to the XR41: 26-degrees of rake and 107mm of trail. Frame weight of the frame was just 8.1 kilos and used just 26 parts – five cold-cast aluminium alloy components and 21 pieces of extruded aluminium. W-HOWHEELSCOOLINGYokouchi-san had looked to engines used in aircraft in a bid to solve the cooling problems of Suzuki’s earlier turbocharged XN85. Rolls Royce Lancaster, Hurricane and a liquid-cooled motor, but later versions were under more stress thanks to the use of powerful superchargers. To help cool them, the engine had jets of oil that were squirted under the 12 pistons in the 27-litre powerplant to help it run cooler. The XN85 and XR41 had used the system. The entire oil-cooling system was called ‘SACS’ or Suzuki Advanced Cooling System.DESIGNThe design team took the fairing off an XR41, including the screen and twin headlights and used that as a basis for the GSX-R750F’s look. The slab-side look came from a desire to cover where the exhaust pipe hangs down on the right hand side. Track-inspired parts also included the use of a foam surround on the three gauges in the cockpit and the tacho needle only began to register from 3000rpm – just like on the race XR41. SINGLE-HANDEDLY BEGINNING THE RACE-REPLICA CRAZE
