On 30 October 2026, foundation stone-laying ceremonies were held in Gujarat, India, for biogas plants planned for constructed in Tharad and Radhanpur by Suzuki Motor Corporation (hereinafter, “Suzuki”) and its wholly owned Indian subsidiary, Suzuki R&D Center India Private Limited (hereinafter, “SRDI”).

Suzuki is promoting the biogas business through SRDI in collaboration with the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), the dairy cooperative Banas Dairy and other partners. Suzuki plans to construct nine biogas plants in Gujarat and has already commenced operations at three plants in Agusara, Bhukhara and Vinchhivadi in the Banaskantha region. The two new plants for which the foundation stone-laying ceremonies were held are scheduled to commence operations in or after 2027.

The ceremonies were attended by the Honourable Shri Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India; the Honourable Shri Bhupendra Patel, Chief Minister of Gujarat; the Honourable Shri Harsh Sanghavi, Deputy Chief Minister of Gujarat; the Honourable Shri Shankar Chaudhary, Chairman of Banas Dairy and Speaker of the Gujarat Legislative Assembly; and Kenichiro Toyofuku, Managing Officer of Suzuki and Director of SRDI, among others.

The construction of these plants forms part of the Japan-India CBG (Cooperative Biogas for Growth) Initiative, which the governments of Japan and India agreed to launch during Prime Minister Takaichi’s visit to India in July 2026. The initiative supports the Indian government’s target of establishing 1,000 biogas plants by promoting production of biogas and organic fertiliser from rural resources such as cattle dung in cooperation with existing cooperatives across India.

Suzuki aims to contribute to reducing fossil fuel consumption by using the biogas produced at the plants as fuel for CNG vehicles, which account for approximately 40% of Suzuki’s automobile sales in India. Suzuki also aims to help realise a self-sustaining circular economy in rural India by promoting the use of by-products as organic fertiliser to improve agricultural soil.

Comment by Toshihiro Suzuki, Representative Director and President, Suzuki Motor Corporation

Suzuki will contribute, in a manner unique to Suzuki, to the wider adoption of biogas plants in India promoted by the governments of Japan and India.”
