Suzuki’s Vehicle Railway Transportation Initiative in India Registered as the World’s First Modal Shift Transportation Project
by a Carbon Credit Registry and Certification Body

Maruti Suzuki India Limited (hereinafter, “Maruti Suzuki”), Suzuki’s subsidiary in India, announced that the modal shift initiative utilizing the in-plant railway siding at its Hansalpur Plant in Gujarat has been registered as the world’s first Modal Shift Transportation Project under the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) Program of Verra, an international carbon credit registry and certification body.
Maruti Suzuki’s railway transportation initiative of the Hansalpur Plant realizes both improved transportation efficiency and reduced environmental impact by shifting vehicle dispatch from the conventional truck to railway. Through this initiative, the project is expected to achieve an estimated reduction of approximately 170,000 tons of CO₂ emissions over a 10-year period, from FY2023 to FY2032.
The emission reductions are calculated based on methodology established under the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Following independent verification of carbon emission saving, carbon credits will be issued by Verra.

Maruti Suzuki became the first Indian automobile manufacturer to be approved as an Automobile Freight Train Operator of vehicles in 2013, and commenced vehicle transportation by railway in FY2014. In March 2023, Maruti Suzuki began operations of the in-plant railway siding at the Hansalpur Plant, from which more than 600,000 vehicles have been dispatched cumulatively. In addition, an in-plant railway siding was commissioned at the Manesar Plant in Haryana in June 2025. In CY2025, Maruti Suzuki transported a record-high volume of more than 580,000 vehicles by railway, bringing the cumulative total to more than 2.8 million vehicles transported via railway.

By expanding the use of railway transportation and improving logistics efficiency, Maruti Suzuki has been working to reduce CO₂ emissions and alleviate road congestion in surrounding areas. Suzuki will continue to promote initiatives to reduce environmental impact across all of its business activities, including logistics operations, contributing to the realization of a carbon-neutral society envisioned by the Government of India and the development of a sustainable society.
