We are pleased to announce that Suzuki Motor Corporation (SMC) will be commencing
construction of a new motorcycle production plant at Vietnam Suzuki Corporation,
SMC's joint venture for automobiles and motorcycles in Vietnam. On July 21, Osamu
Suzuki, Chairman & CEO of SMC attended the groundbreaking ceremony, along
with guests invited from the Ministry of Industry of Vietnam, the People Committee
of Dong Nai Province and others.
Vietnam Suzuki started production in 1996, and the annual production volume were
3,000 automobiles and 60,000 motorcycles in the period from April 2003 through
March 2004. The construction of the new plant is scheduled to start in an industrial
zone near to the current plant, with the investment of 2.1billion yen (approximately
20 million U.S. dollars,) in order to meet increasing market demands for motorcycles.
The new plant is scheduled to start operation in January 2006, with the annual
production capacity of 100,000 units. After the construction is completed, motorcycle
production will be transferred to the new plant, whereas the current one will
keep producing automobiles.
