SUZUKI GREEN Technology has realized low fuel consumption

S-ENE CHARGE :a system that assists the engine’s acceleration with a motor by adopting ISG (IntegratedStarter Generator), a generator with a motor function, and a lithium-ion battery that is specially designed for this system.

ISG (a generator with a motor function) generates electricity by utilizing deceleration energy and charges to lead-acid battery specially designed for vehicles equipped with Engine Auto Stop Start System and lithium-ion battery specially designed for vehicles equipped with S-ENE CHARGE. By assisting the engine with a motor during acceleration, where more fuel is needed, it realizes further fuel efficiency. Also, because the starter motor of the ISG (a generator with a motor function) restarts the engine through a belt after the engine auto stop, it is free from gear engagement noise, so it realizes silent and smooth restart of the engine.

Lithium-ion battery specially designed for vehicles equipped with S-ENE CHARGE

Specially designed for vehicles equipped with S-ENE CHARGE, it complies with high current needed for the motor to assist the engine, which enables frequent assist of the engine.

  • *3 Activation of motor to assist the engine requires a certain condition such as condition of battery.

eNe-CHARGE: a system that supplies electricity to the car during deceleration

Suzuki's eNe-CHARGE system uses a high-efficiency, high-output alternator to generate electricity using the deceleration energy that is available every time the driver releases the accelerator pedal and every time the driver presses the brake pedal. The system stores the electricity in a lead-acid battery that is specially designed for vehicles equipped with Engine Auto Stop Start System and in a high-efficiency lithium-ion battery. It uses the stored electricity to power electrical equipment such as the car's audio system and meters. It thereby minimizes the amount of petrol used by the engine to generate electricity.

High-efficiency lithium-ion battery

The lithium-ion battery is light, compact, and highly efficient. The high efficiency with which this battery stores electricity enables the system to minimize the amount of electricity generated using engine power while the engine is propelling the car. The result is lower fuel consumption.

eNe-CHARGE indicator

When the system starts generating and storing electricity during deceleration, the eNe-CHARGE indicator lights up in the meter cluster to inform the driver.

Newly-developed DUALJET engine with thoroughly-increased thermal efficiency

Suzuki has developed the DUALJET engine which has thoroughly increased thermal efficiency, and started to install on some variants of the European specification Swift from May 2014.
Thermal efficiency is a measure of how much thermal energy in the fuel is converted to motive power. By increasing the thermal efficiency, the engine can utilise the fuel with less waste. In order to achieve this, the potential in the petrol engine needs to be thoroughly pursued. While the most effective way of improving thermal efficiency is to raise the compression ratio, this can cause knocking (abnormal combustion) in the combustion chamber and increase the possibility for engine damage. Thus, advanced technologies to suppress knocking were needed.
The combustion chamber in the DUALJET engine is designed to be smaller than the conventional ones to increase compression ratio for delivering both engine performance and environmental performance at a high level while adopting various technologies (such as cooling technologies) to suppress knocking. Further, the engine is also installed with dual injection system for better thermal efficiency and cooled EGR system for enhanced knocking suppression effect, and realises the optimum compression ratio of "12.0" that converts fuel energy to power at maximum without lowering the output or torque. We also reduced various energy losses and pursued thermal efficiency to the utmost limit to deliver high fuel efficiency while ensuring power required for dynamic driving.

A dual injection system to increase thermal efficiency

Fuel is injected using two injectors per cylinder. Injecting atomised fuel stabilises combustion by making the fuel more readily combustible which enables better thermal efficiency. Further, locating the injectors close to the combustion chamber for more efficient filling of fuel reduces the cylinder temperature and suppresses knocking.

Cooled EGR system to suppress knocking

Water-cooled EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) system has been adopted, which cools and returns some of the exhaust gas to the combustion chamber to reduce combustion temperature, thereby enhancing the knock suppression effect for higher thermal efficiency.

Further technologies for higher thermal efficiency and knocking suppression

Optimisation of the intake port and the piston shape

Strong intake vortex is generated with thinner intake port and smooth and concaved piston crown shape. Efficient combustion of the air-fuel mixture leads to higher thermal efficiency, while suppressing knocking.

Enhancement of cooling performance

Piston-cooling oil jets that cool the underside of the pistons by spraying oil are adopted. Also, with the optimisation of the water jacket shape, cooling performance is enhanced for knocking suppression.

Compact combustion chamber

Combustion chamber is made compact to raise the compression ratio. Because the time for the flame to reach the end of the combustion chamber is shortened, and combustion is quickened, thermal efficiency is increased while suppressing knocking.

Reduction of the mechanical losses

Reduction in frictional resistance of various parts such as the pistons, cylinders, crankshaft, timing chain, and oil pump, leads to higher thermal efficiency.

New Engine Auto Stop Start System: a technology that stops the engine at a speed of 13km/h or less

Suzuki's new Engine Auto Stop Start System limits unnecessary petrol consumption by shutting down the car's engine during deceleration. In the Suzuki Wagon R, it automatically stops the engine when the driver is pressing the brake pedal and the vehicle speed drops to 13km/h or lower. By maximizing the durations of engine shutdown, it helps to maximize fuel savings. The driver can restart the engine by just releasing the brake pedal or turning the steering wheel. Even at junctions, standing starts are smooth. An Engine Auto Stop lamp comes on in the meter cluster to show when the system is active, thereby warning the driver of impending engine shutdown. Also, the system has a hill-hold function that promotes peace of mind for the driver by helping to prevent the car from rolling backward during standing starts on hills.

  • In certain conditions, the Engine Auto Stop Start System does not operate even when the Engine Auto Stop lamp is on.
  • The driver can disable the system by pushing an Engine Auto Stop OFF switch. Also, the driver can use the switch to restart the engine when the system has shut it down.
  • The audio and other electrical systems can still be used when the Engine Auto Stop Start System has shut down the engine. If the air conditioner is running when the Engine Auto Stop Start System shuts down the engine, the climate-control system switches to fan-only operation. If the cabin temperature subsequently rises, the Engine Auto Stop Start System restarts the engine and activates the air conditioner to keep occupants comfortable.
  • The Engine Auto Stop Start System operates only when certain conditions are satisfied.

ECO-COOL: keeping the cabin cool while the engine is shut down

The air-conditioner unit contains a freezable substance that is frozen by the cold air emitted by the unit. When the Engine Auto Stop Start System shuts down the engine and the climate-control system switches to fan-only operation, the air blown by the fan passes over the freezable substance on its way to the cabin. The cool air keeps occupants comfortable. And by limiting the extent to which the cabin temperature rises, it helps to minimize engine restarts and fuel consumption.

Newly evolved light, impact-absorbing TECT bodies

The Total Effective Control Technology (TECT) body structure, which is designed for occupant protection and low weight, incorporates crushable zones for impact absorption, a frame that disperses impact energy, and a super-strong cabin. Extensive use of high-tensile and ultra-high-tensile steel helps to make the body light and outstandingly crashworthy.
