#04 A letter from P-G: from the Midnattssolsrallyt

In the end of June, P-G's father Morgan Andersson participated in the Midnattssolsrallyt, a famous old-timer rally in Sweden. He drove his Opel Ascona B, which P-G had built for him. P-G supported him as a mechanic, but also jumped in as a co-driver, when Morgan's co-pilot got sick.

Hello,
The rally was for cars older than 28 years. Some friends and I had built this car for my dad's 60th birthday. We (P-G, Stefan and Henke) had been working night and day after midsummer to get the car ready for race. I drove the trailer home Tuesday night and took my father out in the forest for a short practice Wednesday. After his first runs he was like a little boy, just wanted to drive more!
I had to leave midday, 600km drive down south in Sweden for new car scrutineering that took place in the afternoon. All was OK and Henke and I could have a relaxed day on Thursday.

It was 160 km SS and 18 different SS over 3 days start in south of Sweden and Finnish in Karlstad.
Friday, rally started. Henke and I were on the first service. There, just after finished SS1, the co-driver was getting sick and they have to stop the rally for the day. I phoned up organizer and told them what happen and ask if I can get in the car for Saturday as a co-driver. After some discussions they phoned me back and told that it is OK, so we started last in the field but had really good fun.

First two stages we had top 20 times out of 150 cars. Finished Saturday and my father was very happy with everything, for the first time in his life he had to listen to someone that newer than him!!!!! Ha ha...
Night service at city centre in Motala, we had to change clutch! Henke and I did a hard work and changed it less than one hour. People around us were very surprised when they saw me as a mechanic under the car!

On Sunday, I tried to push him harder in the driving and it felt OK in slower sections bit when it's fast he doesn't trust his skills!
Unfortunately we had to retire on stage 14 with a broken drive shaft.
But my father was really happy and he wants to do the rally next year again but with more practice before. Last time he drove a rally was 1977 before I was born!! But I am sure that with more practice we can be in top 20 next year!

Best regards
P-G
