Suzuki and Fiat agree for supply of 1.6L diesel engine

Suzuki Motor Corporation will receive supply of 1.6L diesel engine, which realizes low fuel consumption, from Fiat Powertrain Technologies S.p.A. (FPT) and will power the currently developed new model.

Suzuki has agreed to receive supply of high-powered, low fuel consumption 1.6L diesel engine from FPT, which will be equipped on the new model scheduled to be produced in Magyar Suzuki Corporation Ltd. in Hungary from 2013.

Suzuki has been equipping Fiat’s 2.0L diesel engine on Magyar-produced SX4 from 2006. With the competition of fuel consumption increasing internationally, and to be in line with today’s mainstream of downsizing the engine (to realize performance that’s enough for practical use with smaller engine), Suzuki has decided to adopt the 1.6L diesel engine on the currently developed new model.

Moreover, the said diesel engine matches with Suzuki’s all wheel drive, characterized with its lightness and the excellency to cover ground. With the adoption of this diesel engine, it will realize not only decreasing fuel consumption, but advanced product performance as well.

Ever since 2006, Suzuki has been making license production of FPT’s 1.3L diesel engine in India’s production subsidiary, Suzuki Powertrain India Limited, and has produced 200 thousand units last year. The Indian-produced diesel engine is equipped on Indian domestic model, and is also exported to Magyar Suzuki Ltd.
