2001 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb
The 79th Pikes Peak International Hill Climb was held in Colorado, U.S.A., from June 25th through June 30th. This is one of the auto races, with the longest history almost as long as the famous Indy 500 in U.S.A.

This year we challenged with two machines; the brand-new AERIO (LIANA) Pikes Peak special and GRAND VITARA Pikes Peak special. It was the debut race for the AERIO (LIANA), while GRAND VITARA Pikes Peak special had challenged this race for four times, and had finished 2nd place three times.

Mr. Nobuhiro, “Monster”, Tajima, challenged the race with the AERIO Pikes Peak special toward braking the course record. The new machine showed its extraordinary potential, and its speed was outstanding, so everyone in the field believed the course record would be broken. But unfortunately, he retired at one mile before the goal because of a machine trouble.
However, Yutaka Awazuhara, the champion of All Japan Dirt Trial Championship for 12 consecutive years, driving the GRAND VITARA Pikes Peak special, won a victory in the unlimited class, the overall forth place. Although it was his first challenge to this race, his performance was filled with confidence and boldness.
